5 methods for getting free accommodation all over the world

Would you love to travel the planet but they are short on funds? Maybe you need to redesign your existence around immersive travel, or have a travel sabbatical. Travel is conventionally seen as costly luxury, however it does not have to be. I have traveled the planet full-time since 2007 and consistently spent less cash than I ever did to reside in one place. Certainly one of my secrets? I recieve free accommodation all over the world.

In my first 5 years of full-time travel alone, I saved over $63,000 in accommodation expenses. This Year, I spent as many as $173 on accommodation—for the season. This is a taste of 5 ways you can free accommodation round the world (you will discover a lot more details within my new book):

Hospitality Exchanges

Using websites like Couchsurfing and Hospitality Club, you are able to connect with individuals all over the world for any cultural exchange, possibly meals, and frequently accommodations for any couple of days. A great method to make worldwide buddies and obtain a nearby summary of your destination.

Hospitality exchanges really are a short-term method of getting free accommodation, since you wouldn’t want to impose in your host. Good houseguests are just like fresh produce: they’re going off following a couple of days. And even though sometimes both you and your host might click as well as an invitation to remain longer ensues, it’s prudent to not rely on it.

Although you are able to pay (big dollars) to volunteer all over the world, there’s also an industry focused on volunteering in trade free of charge accommodation (and sometimes food). WWOOFing (worldwide focus on organic farms) is frequently the very first factor people consider, but volunteering all over the world is way from restricted to organic farm work. I have colored murals, designed marketing plans, spoken conversational British, milked goats, landscaped, cooked at retreat centers, and more—all for any free destination. Volunteering in trade free of charge accommodation doesn’t only save money, it provides you with a neighborhood and immersive lifestyle that may be culturally rewarding.

Housesitting is among my personal favorite methods for getting free accommodation all over the world, because it truly supplies a slice of local existence and all sorts of comforts of home (somebody else’s home, that’s). Homeowners are grateful for his or her house sitters, because they do not have to ask somebody to determine the mail, water the plants, and when they’ve got pets they’ll save money on exorbitant kennel charges (and creatures are often more happy in your own home).

There exist several websites connecting homeowners with house sitters if you would like a housesitting job you have to be quick to reply to listings and address it professionally. Housesitting gigs may last from the couple of days to several weeks, as well as in certain cases, years.

Living on Motorboats

When I made the decision to test my hands at sailing, I had no clue it had been a whole modality of free accommodation all over the world. You will find yacht proprietors searching for an additional set of hands, charter motorboats requiring some assistance with visitors, mega yachts requiring people of numerous skills, and full-sized luxury cruise ships hiring for countless available positions.

I traveled the world someplace sunny and warm for 3 several weeks (on five motorboats spanning three countries) with no night on land. I stuck to smaller sized yachts and also the odd charter sailboat after i found my first boat to remain on (through Look for a Crew)—the rest ran naturally through person to person using the small yachting community.

Home Exchanges

This really is the only real modality of free accommodation I’ve not attempted (because of my not getting a house to switch). The key is comparable to housesitting, except that it is reciprocal arrangement. Although you be assured that your house and pets are now being looked after, but you will get free accommodation and revel in the comforts of (another woman’s) home.

Some home exchange websites (which you will find dozens) coordinate three-way exchanges and use holiday qualities to satisfy people’s home exchange demands that could be difficult to fulfil having a straight two-way exchange.

Silver Riolu: It's a pity only men can live that way, I'm a woman and don't want to be sexually assaulted, some countries treat women as second-class citizens as well…

hhan44: +RideFlash nice, whole countries full of nice guy white knights… sounds horrible. But yeah don't trust media :)

smoll: try hitchhiking as a female..

Bolivar: smoll May be I can accompany you. Safety guaranteed from me.

rishi503: I am an Indian and even if i leave my job and convince my parents etc. It is nearly impossible for me to hitch hike without any money as the basic condition of a visa for Indian passport is proof of fund and accommodation. So we automatically loose the race before it is ever started. Sometimes i envy you guys as you can really see the world the way you want and despite of all the education and efforts we usually end up dead in our 9 to 5 jobs. Well mine is actually 8 to 5.
